Behind the scenes: BMC guidebooks

Much of the BMC’s work is overseen by specialist groups made up of volunteers with relevant skills and experience, who guide the work of BMC staff. In the world of mountain literature, one award stands head and shoulders over all the others in terms of status and glory. The Banff Mountain Book Competition Awards, based in Canada, have long been held as the gold standard seal of approval; the Olympics, the Oscars, the Mount Everest of climbing. A victory here is a proud nod towards anyone’s work.

British and Irish Climbing guidebooks – The 2013 Supplement

Such is the way with recording history – as soon as you do it it’s out of date. Alan Moss’ recent, exhaustive catalogue, British and Irish Climbing Guidebooks 1894 to 2011 – A Collector’s Guide, was an exhaustive directory to the state of play of over a century of guidebooks. Since its recent publication, it will come as no surprise to hear that the light it shone on the subject has shown up some anomalies.

Guidebook collectors are an obsessive breed. They prowl around second-hand bookshops and websites, hunting down that rare edition or previously unknown pamphlet like a lion with a gazelle in its sights. Stumbling across a rare edition means one step closer to completing their collection.

Full house for Stanage guidebook launch

The new BMC Stanage guidebook got its official unveiling on Friday evening in Sheffield to a packed house of people who have been connected with Stanage and the Stanage guidebook over the years. Everyone was delighted with the new guidebook, saying it may even be the best yet.
